Friends Susie Sleswick and Glenda Page, are two women from Gippsland in Victoria Australia with a long standing connection to and shared passion for Africa.
Susie is a mum to three adult children and works as a Welfare Officer in a primary school. Glenda is a mum to three boys, working in state government.
Both are passionate about empowering children to reach their full potential.
Joseline is an integral part of the successful implementation of Sheka Africa’s programs. Joseline is the founder and director of Future Generation Nursery and Primary School, in rural Uganda. FGNP is where the majority of our sponsor children attend school.
Joseline herself was sponsored for her education and always had the dream to open her own school for the poorest communities in Uganda.
Vision
To optimise the health, safety, wellbeing and education of Ugandan children, their families and communities, to empower them to be the determiners of their own futures and to lead lives they value.
Purpose
To build strong foundations in impoverished communities in rural Uganda through the education of children and care of the vulnerable.
Future Generation Nursery and Primary school - (FGNP) in rural Uganda began operating in 2013. This was the dream of Joseline, who herself was educated through sponsorship. She began her professional career as a teacher and later school principal before embarking on the journey of building her own school to educate the most vulnerable children in rural Uganda.
On a visit to Kabale, Uganda, in 2016 we spent time at FNGP and saw the desperate need to support the education of children who would otherwise not have the opportunity to be educated.
On our return to Australia, we shared our story with friends and soon we had lots of people interested in supporting a child's education. Our grass roots sponsorship program was born.
Seven years down the track and through the generous support of so many, we now have over 220 children being supported through our program. In November 2020 after much blood sweat and tears we were able to formalise our project and were granted Australian Charity Status.
Sheka means 'smile' in the local Rukiga language of Rubanda District, Uganda.
Sheka Africa Ltd is a registered charity with the ACNC (Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission) as a Public Benevolent Institution (PBI) and has DGR1 status (Deductible Gift Recipient) with the ATO (Australian Taxation Office).
